Dry-Hire Mobile Bar
At Greene Olives, transparency is part of our service. We want every client to feel fully informed, relaxed, and confident about how alcohol service works at their event. Below is a simple breakdown of what dry-hire means, who provides what, and when a host or venue may need a temporary alcohol permit in Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia.

What Is a Dry-Hire Mobile Bar?
Greene Olives is a dry-hire mobile bartending company.
That means:
-
We provide:
Licensed mixologists, bar setup, tools, mixers, garnishes, ice, and full service. -
You provide:
The alcohol for your event (or purchase it through a licensed vendor).

We do not sell, purchase, transport, or distribute alcohol. We simply serve the alcohol you provide. This model keeps your event compliant across multiple jurisdictions AND gives you more control over your budget and beverage selection.
Alcohol Permit Requirements by Location
Depending on your event location and venue type, you may be required to obtain a temporary alcohol permit, especially if your event is in Virginia or held in a public space.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
Washington, DC
(Regulating Agency: ABCA – Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration)

Most private events do not require a temporary alcohol license if alcohol is free and the event is private.

A permit is required when:
-
Alcohol is sold or included with admission
-
The event is open to the public
-
Alcohol is served in public spaces (parks, rooftops, etc.)

Maryland
(Regulating Agency: Maryland Alcohol & Tobacco Commission – ATCC)

Maryland’s rules vary by county, not statewide. Most private events with free alcohol do not require a permit.
A permit may be required for:
-
Public events
-
Ticketed events
-
Events where alcohol is sold
-
Venues requiring county approval
Virginia
(Regulating Agency: Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority – ABC)
Virginia has the strictest permitting requirements in the region. If your venue does not already have its own ABC license, the host or venue must obtain a One-Day Banquet License — even if the alcohol is complimentary to guests.

A permit is typically required for:
-
Weddings
-
Corporate events
-
Private parties at rented venues
-
Outdoor venues or public/community spaces
-
Events in Airbnbs, banquet halls, estates, barns, etc.

A permit is not required for:
-
Private events inside your own personal residence
(This does not apply to Airbnb or rental properties.)

Apply for a One-Day Banquet License (online application)
Processing is usually fast (1–2 business days), and the license must be printed and displayed on the day of the event.
