The Shug Avery

A Femme Fatale Cocktail from The Sippin’ Lounge Collection

Sip Mood: Soulful • Bold • Seductive

The Story

Some cocktails are created behind busy bars during late-night shifts. Others are born in quieter moments, when creativity and survival meet. The Shug Avery cocktail came to life during the early days of the pandemic, when the hospitality industry slowed to a halt, and many of us behind the bar had to find new ways to keep going.

During that time, I began creating a series of cocktails inspired by bold women—women who were fearless, magnetic, complicated, and unapologetically themselves. I bottled and sold these drinks to friends and family as a way to stay creative and make ends meet while the world felt uncertain.

One of the first characters who came to mind was Shug Avery, the unforgettable singer from The Color Purple. Shug is the kind of woman who walks into a room and immediately changes the energy. She’s rebellious, sensual, and fiercely independent. People are drawn to her confidence, but beneath that bold exterior is someone who spent much of her life searching for where she truly belonged.

That spirit of confidence and complexity became the inspiration for this cocktail.

The Shug Avery is bright, soulful, and just a little rebellious. Cognac and Grand Marnier bring warmth and depth, while citrus and grapefruit syrup create a vibrant golden glow. The drink feels elegant yet bold—much like the character herself.

In my mind, this cocktail always belongs in a room with music playing low in the background and the lights dimmed just enough to feel a little mysterious. The perfect soundtrack is “Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister)”, the song that captures Shug Avery’s confidence, glamour, and unapologetic femininity.

That song — and Shug Avery’s character — always remind me to keep my head up and never forget where I come from or where I’ve been. Those experiences shape who we become. Wear them proudly, boldly, and gracefully as you move onward.

Like its namesake, this cocktail doesn’t quietly blend into the background. It shows up, shines bright, and reminds you that sometimes the boldest choices lead you exactly where you’re meant to be.

Highball Version

Shake the cocktail ingredients with ice and strain over fresh ice in a highball glass. Top with a splash of sparkling water for a lighter, refreshing variation.
